The world as we know it has changed because of CoronaVirus also known as COVID19, a novel virus originated in Wuhan, China. It has affected the education system, healthcare, jobs, businesses, and other essential services. The disease has caused a lockdown for the last five months of 2020. The way we shop and our supermarkets have seen drastic changes.

If you have been to one lately, you might see some obvious changes. Supermarkets, an essential spot for groceries and home supplies had to create guidelines and methods to keep their products safe from contamination while keeping their customers safe.

When you enter a supermarket or any store, it’s important to stand six feet apart at all times. Tiffany Thomas, a journalist based in New York said she

“never thought the world would turn out like this and it’s unbelievable.”

She expressed that her “shopping experience has changed tremendously because waiting in long lines and standing 6 feet apart from each has taken the fun out of finding groceries and even clothes shopping.”

There is limited physical contact because of social distancing rules. Masks are mandatory when entering a supermarket or any store. If you refuse to wear a mask, a sales representative can decline to serve or prevent you from entering their store. Cleaning the shopping carts is also important. In some supermarkets like Trader Joe’s or BJ’s, customers have access to cleaning supplies for their cart.

Thomas has experienced the changes in all the grocery stores she visits. She said that “since COVID19, we have to stay six feet apart in the stores and we can’t enter without a mask.” Thomas explained how weird it feels especially “especially when a plexiglass shield separates the cashier and I.”
