Southeast Queens Is Provided With Vaccine Hub Targeting Community Residents

York College has launched a COVID-19 vaccine hub on February 20, 20221 to provide community residents of Southeast Queens access to vaccination . In recent studies, it has been indicated that a low number of residents from Southeast Queens have obtained the vaccine. For one week, community residents in the following zip codes will be able to schedule appointments despite what group they fall in for the vaccine rollout:The appointment scheduling will be open to only Southeast Queens and Far Rockaway residents of the ZIP codes 11411, 11412, 11413, 11418, 11419, 11420, 11422, 11423, 11427, 11428, 11429, 11432, 11433, 11434, 11435, 11436, 11691, 11692 and 11693.In order to apply, residents can go online at:

The hesitancy from communities of color to be vaccinated has been addressed in many forums over the the past 4 months. Recently, District 31 City Council Candidate, Selvena-Brooks-Powers hosted a community conversation including local doctors of diverse backgrounds on the importance of being vaccinated.The forum was made available via Zoom and streamed through Facebook Live.

Dr. Veronica Wiltshire provided a breakdown on the importance of getting vaccinated.

Prior, one of the various community conversations that have been streamed by local officials, Howard University hosted a medical forum with Dr. Fauci to address the concerns of Black & Brown communities in regards to COVID-19. In the converation, Dr. Fauci pointed out that the lead scientist in the creation of the vaccine is a Black woman by the name of Dr. Kizzemekia S. Corbett.

Dr. Kizzmekia S. Corbett is a research fellow and the scientific lead for the Coronavirus Vaccines & Immune pathogenesis Team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Vaccine Research Center (VRC).

In conclusion, The COVID-19 Rapid Response Team at the Whitehouse provided an update to the public informing citizens there is a decline in the number of COVID-19 cases but a delay in the distribution of vaccine due to the inclement weather around the country. In addition the response team introduced V-Safe, a after vaccination health checker. According to the CDC: V-safe is a smartphone-based tool that uses text messaging and web surveys to provide personalized health check-ins after you receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Through v-safe, you can quickly tell CDC if you have any side effects after getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Depending on your answers, someone from CDC may call to check on you and get more information. V-safe will also remind you to get your second COVID-19 vaccine dose if you need one.

Clarisa James
Clarisa James is the Co-Founder/Executive Director of DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice. For the past seven years DIVAS has provided free or sliding scale technology training to youth in underserved communities in Central Brooklyn and Southeast Queens. Ms. James has been dedicated to youth development work for the past 15years in the roles of Teaching Artist, After School Director, Curriculum Specialist and artist. Her life's work encompasses empowering youth in underserved communities to use technology for social change and think critically about the issues that are affecting them most. For the past seven years Ms. James has facilitated workshops that help youth develop multimedia projects around environmental justice, housing, leadership development and reproductive justice. Ms. James holds an MFA in Integrated Media Arts from Hunter College's Film & Media Department. In addition to DIVAS for Social Justice, Ms. James currently serves on the advisory board of the Children’s Cabinet, Office of the Deputy Mayor Strategic Policy Initiatives at City Hall. Clarisa James is full of gratitude to her parents for providing such a wonderful upbringing and having the foresight to move into the community of Laurelton in the early 1970's.
