Amanda Gorman’s poem, The Hill We Climb, is inspiring because It taught young black boys and girls to dream about being president or vice president one day and that their dreams can become a reality. Gorman’s poem inspires me to achieve my goal of becoming the person I want to be. I will not allow anything or anyone to kill my dream because Amanda’s The Hill We Climb reminded me I can achieve any goal. Anything is possible. I’ve learned that being quiet isn’t always peaceful. –Jaliyah Charles

Amanda Gorman’s poem, The Hill We Climb, was such a big deal because she articulated it so well, that it sent shockwaves throughout the Black community. As a black boy, I feel proud of our race because we can show the world that we have a place and we have a seat at the table. “If only we’re brave enough to see it; if only we’re brave enough to be it.” This means that there is always a way to prevail; there is always a path to victory IF we take action and be it. –Levi Ashman

Because we are in a pandemic, I would ask the future if we’ve recovered or are we stuck in the same place? I would also ask if the country is still as divided as we are now? A line from the poem that stood out to me is: “For while we have our eyes on the future, history has its eyes on us.” It stood out to me because as a fan of the musical Hamilton, I heard those words oh so many times before. I was intrigued because I never heard the poem and knew little about the poet. However, that line excited me. –Tahrea Kokason
