Students And Teachers Say Safety Is Their Top Priority

Schools are reopening in the fall and I feel insecure and afraid to return because Coronavirus is still lingering. Since COVID19, the traditional learning forum has changed. Learning for myself, like other students, has been a challenge. Online learning has been a challenge, but it’s better than risking lives. I spoke to a high school student on anonymity who “feels insecure and angry because they still haven’t found a cure for the virus.” Safety seems to be the biggest concern for a variety of people I’ve spoken to.

One individual echoed the same concern that “they felt unsafe because they do not know who has COVID from who does not.” The United Federation of Teachers have collected nearly 4000 signatures demanding that schools remain locked until there are no COVID19 cases. One of New York’s many educators says,

“I have mixed emotions because as teachers, we have to educate. But, I am concerned about the safety of all teachers and students.”

I spoke to Jermaine Walker, a 14-year-old student at Flushing High School. He “feels insecure and angry because they still do not have a cure for the virus, and I have to go into a classroom.” Jermaine said he “doesn’t like the virus because he cannot get fast food, and it causes everywhere to shut down.”

Fox5 reported that over 150 health experts across the nation signed an open letter calling for a second COVID-19 lockdown. I believe there should be another lockdown in the U.S. because over five million people were tested positive for the virus. Over 170,000 died, according to Johns Hopkins University. The Truth of the matter is there’s pressure to reopen because of the current economy due to Coronavirus.
