Food Justice

The Garden Of Resilience is committed to addressing the issue of food insecurity in Southeast Queens and is committed to providing fruits and vegetables to all at no cost. Our community garden is also the first community garden in Southeast Queens to serve as a Food Scrap Drop Off Site (FDSO) since January 2021. In partnership with the Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) and The Department Of Sanitation (DSNY), the garden is open to accept vegan food scraps every Saturday from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Recently, other green spaces in Southeast Queens have decided to work in conjunction with QBG and DSNY. Paradise Community Garden & King Manor serves as FDSO sites as well. The Garden Of Resilience stands in solidarity with these green spaces and has created an infographic and Google Map to promote green spaces in Southeast Queens that move us toward a more sustainable and just community.

Why Should We Collect Food Scraps In Southeast Queens?

Why is collecting food scraps important to Southeast Queens? By reducing the tons of solid waste sent to landfills in our communities, we can directly impact the air pollution in and Black and Latinx communities. Our food scraps can then be converted to compost. Compost is decayed organic material used as plant fertilizer. The compost can feed our gardens and give back to our land for robust fruits and vegetables.  According to Cafeteria Culture, a grassroots organization composting:reduces our garbage to landfills and incinerators, builds soil, creates local green jobs, sequesters carbon. All of the food scraps provided by community residents have the potential to directly impact the issue of climate change and food insecurity.

You can bring your food scraps every Saturday at The Garden Of Resilience from 9AM- 1PM.
