Ida Owens and her daughter Aziza who are Visual Artists both were raised in Laurelton, Queens and currently live here. The mother and daughter artistic duo are exhibiting together at the Annual Black History Group Art Show “Hidden Talents” at Octagon Gallery on Roosevelt Island, NY.

Ms. Owens is an award winning Art Educator with over 30 years teaching experience who has dedicated her life to arts and education. In Queens, she taught Art at PS/IS 270Q The Gordon Parks School for Inquisitive Minds and founded the Annual Art Gala in 2007 at PS/IS 270Q, a wonderful celebration of the arts and community featuring a youth art exhibition, music, dance, and theatrical performances, engaging people of all ages.

Aziza is a visual Artist, Printmaker, and Illustrator. Aziza’s work has been featured on the History Channel, Style Network Channel, and African Voices Magazine. Aziza and her mom are both extremely passionate about the arts. They collaborate on many art projects promoting the arts and community here in Laurelton, throughout New York City, and internationally.

You can experience Ida Owens and Aziza’s artwork at “Hidden Talents” Exhibition at Octagon Gallery which runs until March 25, 2018. Gallery Hours: Daily, 8 am – 9pm. Octagon Gallery is located at 888 Main Street, Roosevelt Island New York, 10044. The beautiful mother and daughter were also featured on NY 1.

Clarisa James
Clarisa James is the Co-Founder/Executive Director of DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice. For the past seven years DIVAS has provided free or sliding scale technology training to youth in underserved communities in Central Brooklyn and Southeast Queens. Ms. James has been dedicated to youth development work for the past 15years in the roles of Teaching Artist, After School Director, Curriculum Specialist and artist. Her life's work encompasses empowering youth in underserved communities to use technology for social change and think critically about the issues that are affecting them most. For the past seven years Ms. James has facilitated workshops that help youth develop multimedia projects around environmental justice, housing, leadership development and reproductive justice. Ms. James holds an MFA in Integrated Media Arts from Hunter College's Film & Media Department. In addition to DIVAS for Social Justice, Ms. James currently serves on the advisory board of the Children’s Cabinet, Office of the Deputy Mayor Strategic Policy Initiatives at City Hall. Clarisa James is full of gratitude to her parents for providing such a wonderful upbringing and having the foresight to move into the community of Laurelton in the early 1970's. Clarisa is proud to be a daughter of Laurelton.
