Hello , my name is Jeremi Smith & I am a part of the STEAM program at the Linden SDA school. At this program, we are currently petitioning for a community garden. I’m pretty sure that the questions that may be clouding your brains are “What is this garden? ,“Why is it important to change it from an abandoned lot to a garden?” “ Why is this garden important to the neighborhood?” and lastly “What does your school & the program have to do with the garden?” Well I am going to tell answer all of those questions for you.
The Laurelton Garden of Resilience is ( or will be ) a community garden that is open to ALL of the Laurelton community. The garden will have fresh fruits & vegetables that you can pick yourself. It will also act as a place for exercise and meditation. As well , act as a place to bring the community together.
It is important to have a community garden in the space opposed to an abandoned lot because a community garden would bring beauty to the community whereas an abandoned lot would more than likely just cause pollution. A community garden would also bring the community together while an abandoned lot would probably just get walked pass and wouldn’t do much for the community.
Building a community garden in our neighborhood is important because it can bring the residences of our community together. It can also bring them peace of mind about the good that is being done in the community. Another thing that it can do is help to expand our mind sets , not only in nature but in people. It can and will also have its health benefits , from healthy foods to a healthy body. Based on MY personal experience, the people of the community seemed to enjoy the fact that there were young people looking to better the neighborhood. They also liked the fact that it’s free.
The importance of my school being part of the process is the fact that it’s helping some of the younger people in the community to help thebe active in the community and be a part of a HUGE social change. The Sen19rs of the L.S.D.A. School are required to do 25 hours of community service to graduate & helping to bring the community garden to life is the perfect opportunity.
