My name is Jerome, I go to Linden SDA school. I am apart of the Steam DIVAS for Social Justice program and we have a project called the Laurelton Community Garden of Resilience. The goal of the Laurelton Community Garden of Resilience is to bring the community together and bring more healthy options to the community. It will bring the community together because it will be a place that the community can socialize. People will also be able to plant their own fruits and vegetables ,which would be healthier option than some of the fruits and vegetables in the supermarkets.
The community garden can also persuade or encourage the community residents to eat healthier and choose healthier options in the community. I believe that Laurelton is a food swamp and a food desert. I believe that it is a food swamp because Laurelton is full of fast food places, which is the definition of a food swamp. It is also a food desert because there are little to non-healthy food stores or restaurants. The amount of these stores and restaurants are increasing each year but it is not enough. Recently, my class went to the area where the community garden will be. We went to the neighbors to tell them that a community garden will be coming soon. Most people were pretty positive and were happy to know that a community garden was coming. Some people were also happy that they say young people who were interested in their community. This was a good experience and helped us to get a lot of feedback.
In conclusion the community garden will help the community and it seems that people of the community will be happy to have it too. There will be healthier options in the community and hopefully this will be the start of something great. Hopefully it will start to increase the amount of healthy things in the community. It might also encourage people to make a change. This is why I think this community garden will be great.
