Laurelton will have its 1st Community Garden in the Fall of 2019. Inspired by the work of Laurelton Operation Clean Up, local residents identified an abandoned lot in the community and researched the land to find out the space was owned by the city and in need of stewards of the green space The land is located at: 179-18 145th Drive . The location is Laurelton/Springfield Gardens area . Through great effort, the land is in the process of being transferred to the Parks Department . Once the transfer is completed , the space will be registered as a community garden.
With the support of Councilman Donovan Richards and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, The Laurelton Community Garden Of Resilience has been able to purchase the following items for the garden:
A 12 x12 Gazebo for garden members and school partners
A tool shed
2 picnic tables
Deluxe Tool Tower
DIVAS for Social Justice and Laurelton Operation Clean Up will be hosting a General Interest Meeting at 9AM for all community members to attend . The Parks Department will be in attendance as well. We are seeking active members of the garden to help with the following for the initial phase and beyond:
- Clearing of the land where our future garden will be
- Building community garden beds that are wheelchair and senior accessible to avoid strenuous bending.
- Carpentry and Construction assistance in building our garden gazebo
- Assisting with the design of recycling wooden pallets for vertical gardening
- Joining the Social Media Marketing Team to promote the garden
- Joining the development team to help fundraise and develop activities for the garden
The Laurelton Community Garden of Resilience has set the following goals for the green space:
1)STEM/STEAM based education opportunities will be offered initially to the
following institutions: P.S156, The Linden SDA School and P.S132. Each school will!be provided a garden bed to grow vegetables or flowers.
2)FarmersMarket- Once the garden has been established , we would like to organize a local farmers market that is offered by the Laurelton LIRR targeting commuters and providing an entrepreneurial opportunity to members.
3)Meditation/ExercisePath- The green space will also provide a safe space for residents to meditate and have a walking path to enjoy for all.
4) The garden will be handicapped accessible and senior friendly by featuring elevated gardens to avoid strenuous bending.
