Today, November 7, 2019, was the monthly meeting of the Federated Blocks of Laurelton at the Theta Chi Chapter office. To begin the night, the board began by reviewing information given in the previous meeting last month as well as the improvements coming to Laurelton such as street signs and speed bumps. This meeting focused on fire prevention.
As the meeting continued, a guest speaker from American Red Cross spoke about a new Home Fire Campaign which helps those in need during disasters. The Home Fire Campaign helps with fire precaution education and gives you a free installation of smoke detectors for your home. Based on data reports, in New York, there is an average of 62,000 disasters per year such as fires and American Red Cross deals with 6-8 disasters within a day. Queens itself has an extremely high rate of fires a year.
From the Fire Department, Paul Colbolla informed attendees about fire prevention is very significant in a household. He advised that people should refrain from smoking in bed which can be very dangerous. He also informed the community members that using a candle and not putting it out could be a fire hazard depending on the type of candle. Mr. C also talks about electrical fires caused by extension cord overloads due to appliances being plugged into the extension rather that an electrical outlet.
If a fire erupts in your household, you should get really close to the floor because that is where all the fresh air would be when smoke is present. Also, it’s better to have your door closed during a fire because the smoke from fires tend to travel to find fresh air and if your door is closed, the smoke won’t get into your room easily. The final lesson he taught us was how to use a fire extinguisher using the acronym PASS.
