February 6, marks the first Federated Blocks of Laurelton meeting of 2020 at the Theta Chi Chapter office. To begin the night, the board reviewed the minutes from the last meeting in December as well as increasing crime rates in the neighborhood.
Officers Kisane and Patrick spoke about auto theft having the highest crime rate percentage. It is evident that car owners tend to leave their cars unattended which give criminals the opportunity to take action. They take what they want and what’s of value. Auto theft commonly occurs around neighborhood grocery stores, delis, coffee shops, and newspaper stands. Both officers said that package theft is at a low this year which is a step into change for Laurelton. Another major concern is scam phone calls. An unknown phone number is likely a scam caller attempting to gain access to their victims’ assets and information..
Chief of Staff, Manny Silva from Councilman Donovan Richards’ office, informed the attendees about the council’s responsibilities to residents and business owners of Laurelton such as allocating tax dollars, advocating for the people, and implementing new laws. Manny also spoke about redesigning some MTA bus routes such as the Q111, Q85, and Q77. There are plans to also modify bus schedules.
Guest speaker, Bess DeBetham introduced the 2020 census. Its mission is to foster community preparedness and inspire individual action to support a fair and accurate census in 2020 and beyond. The census asks questions that provide a snapshot of the nation. Answering the question of the census can affect government actions such as funding and plans for the neighborhood.
Vice President, Verdell announced the Federated Blocks of Laurelton scholarship award, worth $1,000. It will assist a high school student from Laurelton, Queens in achieving their goals and pursue their dreams. An application is available at the Laurelton Library.
President Robert Glover announced that as of May 1, 2020, plastic bags will be banned in New York State and businesses will now use five-cent fee paper bags. Reusable bags were provided for those in attendance.
