Lisa Garcia has always had an entrepreneurial spirit, thanks to her mother. As a child Lisa’s mother modeled through her eyes business ownership in running beauty salons that serviced Queens and beyond. As an only child, Garcia found companionship in the items in her bedroom. “I can still see my childhood desk clearly, and removing crayon shavings and old spelling tests so that my desk was organized!” In 2021, Lisa decided to start MinimalisaNYC after the passing of her mother and with her children reaching adulthood. MinimalismLisa NYC is a decluttering operation that aims to create spaces that create peace, joy and prosperity. There was space in her heart that needed to be filled by serving others. Garcia states, “I’ve been on my own decluttering journey for many years. To find your happiness, think back to what brought you joy and peace before the world got a hold of you.”
MinimalisaNYC has served over 100 homes in the past two years, helping families declutter their lives. Garcia has worked in all five boroughs with the exception of Staten Island. In addition, her business has taken her upstate and even to Illinois to help others. She credits resources like The BlaQue Resource Network, and Black Long Island with helping spread the word of her services.
With a background of over 10 years in nurse management , an educator and a home healthcare nurse, Garcia applies therapeutic communication with clients in order to get to the “why” to ensure success in the decluttering process. “When you work in someone’s home, you have to be deferential to their needs and to respect how their home functions. It’s important to always be respectful. For example, asking, “Where should I put this or where can I wash my hands is always important.”
Garcia is also compassionate to how much courage it takes to call a decluttering business and admit there is an issue. She initially takes a phone call consultation to see if her and the client are a good fit. “99% of the time, when people are ready to make that call and admit they are embarrassed or shameful. I let them know upfront, I come with zero judgment, my role is not to judge you. My role is to assist you in solving this issue.”
Through social media, Garcia has launched many decluttering challenges with incentives for the greater community, free of charge. Many people engage virtually and she wants them to take it to the next level. Garcia compares this to a similar Behavioral Change Model in substance abuse that follows the following steps:
- Pre-contemplation
- Contemplation
- Preparation
- Action
Garcia says, “Your life will change by addressing this work. Your home will not just look better but you will feel better. So often clutter is associated with anxiety and depression. It will not be the cure but it will definitely help.”
MinimalisaNYC will be hosting a Holiday Gift Shop at The Garden Of Resilience on December 9, 2023 from 12-4 PM. Garcia will re-home new items as holiday gifts for community members that want to provide gifts this holiday season but may have financial constraints. Being able to provide a free shopping experience is an opportunity to connect and celebrate with each other. We are seeking community donations in the form of : new items, wrapping paper, cups for hot chocolate and more.
